Waheeda Rehman is an Indian actress, she was born on 3 February 1938, in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India. She is a very beautiful and one of the most popular actresses in the Indian film industry. She mostly appeared in Hindi films as well as in Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali films. She is known for appearing in different genres of films. Waheeda Rehman has won several awards in her career including a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, a National Award for Best Actress and two Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She is called the “most beautiful” actress by the media.
Waheeda Rehman was born into a Dakhini Muslim family in Tamil Nadu. Her father died, when she was a teenager. She has a sister and they learned Bharatanatyam in Chennai, under Guru Trichunder Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. And their Bombay guru was Guru Jayalaxmi Alva. They used to perform on stage together. Her dream was to become a doctor but due to her illness, she failed to achieve her goal and later entered into the film career.
Waheeda Rehman made her film debut with 1955 Telugu film Rojulu Marayi starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Sowcar Janaki. Then she appeared in a Telugu film Jayasimah and a Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu. All the three films were successful and praised.
Guru Dutt saw Waheeda Rehman’s excellent performance in Rojulu Marayi, then bring her to Bombay to cast her in his production Hindi film C.I.D alongside Dev Anand and Shakila, under the direction of Raj Khosla. Waheeda Rehman appeared as a vamp in the movie and the film was a huge success. Producer Guru Dutt again cast her as a lead heroine in Pyaasa in 1957 alongside Guru Dutt himself. She next appeared in Kaagaz Ke Phool opposite again Guru Dutt. They continued working together till the 1960s. In 1962, she acted in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Soon after, Guru Dutt died in 1964 because of an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol.
In 1965, Waheeda Rehman appeared in a romantic drama film Guide opposite Dev Anan, under the direction of Vijay Anand. Her performance in the film was praised by the critics and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She has also acted in Bengali films and acted in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film Abhijan in 1962. She has also acted with Kishore Kumar in a comedy film Girl Friend.
In 1971, Waheeda Rehman appeared in Hindi crime drama film Reshma Aur Shera alongside Sunil Dutt, under his direction and production. Though the film failed at the box office but her acting was praised by the critics. And For her performance, she won the National Award for Best Actress. Next, she appeared in several success films including Trishul, Jwalamukhi, Namkeen and Namak Halaal, Mashaal, Chandni, Rang De Basanti. Her recent films were, Om Jai Jagadish, Water, Rang De Basanti, 15, Park Avenue and Delhi 6.
Waheeda Rehman married to Shashi Rekhi on 27 April 1974. She has Two children, Sohail and Kashvi, who are writers.
