Usha Uthup is a popular Indian pop singer, she was born on 7 November 1947, in Mumbai, India. She is also a jazz and playback singer. She is well-known for her songs in the late 1960s to 1980s. She has sung in several regional Indian languages including Bengali, Hindi, English, Punjabi, Assamese, Oriya, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. She has also sung in various foreign languages including Dutch, French, German, Italian, Sinhalese, Swahili, Russian, Nepalese, Arabic, Creole, Zulu, and Spanish. She is also very popular for her unique attire. Usha Uthup achieved the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2012. She is also a film and television actress and appeared in Tamil, Malayalam, English, Kannada and Hindi films & several Television Shows
Usha Uthup was born as Usha Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami to a Tamil Brahmin family in Mumbai. Her father’s name was Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami, who was from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She did her schooling at the St. Agnes High School. When she was in school, she attended music class but she was thrown out of music class because she didn’t fit in singing with a voice like her. But her music teacher recognized that she had some music inside her. Later she hadn’t received any formal training in music but she grew up in a musical atmosphere because her parents used to listen to a wide range of Western classical to Hindustani and Carnatic music. Usha Uthup’s next door neighbor influenced her to learn Hindi and try Indian classical music.
Usha Uthup began her singing career at the age of 9. She met to the most popular radio announcer in India that time, Ameen Sayani, who gave her an opportunity to sing in Radio Ceylon.
Usha Uthup started singing in a small nightclub called Nine Gems in Chennai. She started wearing a saree and leg calipers at the age of 20. The nightclub was so impressed with her performance that offered to stay on for a week. Later she also sang in several nightclubs in Calcutta. She started her Bollywood career with the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. In the film, she was supposed to sing Dum Maro Dum with Asha Bhosle but she lost her chance later. In 1968, Usha Uthup recorded two English pop songs “Jambalaya” and “Greenback Dollar”.
In 1974, Usha Uthup sang “Love Is Just Around The Corner” for the Malayalam film Chattakkari, under G. Devarajan’s composition. From the 1970s to 1980s, she has sung several songs for music directors R. D. Burman and Bappi Lahiri. Usha Uthup’s popular songs under R. D. Burman composition were, “Ek Do Cha Cha Cha” for Shalimar, “Shaan Se…” and “Doston Se Pyar Kiya” for Shaan and under Bappi Lahiri’s composition were, “Tu Mujhe Jaan Se Bhi Pyara Hai” for Wardat, “Hari Om Hari” for Pyaara Dushman, “Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache” for Disco Dancer and etc.
Usha Uthup is also a film actress and appeared in several films including Bombay to Goa, Bow Barracks Forever’, 7 Khoon Maaf, X, Rock On 2 and etc.
Usha Uthup Married Jani Chacko Uthup and they have a daughter, Anjali and a son, Sunny.
