Simran is an Indian film actress, she was born on 4 April 1976, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She is professionally known as only Simran. She is known for her Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films. She has also worked on Hindi films.
Simran was born as Rishibala Naval to a Punjabi family. Her father’s name is Ashok Naval and her mother’s name is Sharda. She has two sisters, Monal Naval and Jyothi Naval and also a brother, Sumith Naval. She did her schooling at St. Anthony’s high school, in Versova, Mumbai. She is fluent in speaking Punjabi, Hindi, English, and Tamil languages. She learned dancing and can perform Bharatanatyam and Salsa.
Simran’s debut Hindi film was Sanam Harjal in 1995, under the direction of Saawan Kumar. This film was shot in New Zealand and it was the first film to be shot in New Zealand. For this film, she stayed abroad for three months. But this film was a box office failure. Later Jaya Bachchan offered her a lead role in her production, a romantic drama film Tere Mere Sapne, after seeing her in a show Superhit Muqabla as a presenter in Doordarshan’s Metro channel. Then Simran acted in Muqaddar, Angaara and Daadagiri, Bal Bramhachari as a supporting actress.
Simran’s debut in South Indian film as a lead actress was the Malayalam film Indraprastham alongside Mammootty. In 1997, she appeared in a Kannada film Simhada Mari, alongside Shivarajkumar, which is her only Kannada film till date.
Simran made her debut in the Tamil films by acting in Nerrukku Ner, alongside Vijay, Surya, directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Ratnam. Later she appeared in some successful movies such as V.I.P (1997), Natpukkaga (1998), and Aval Varuvala (1998), sharing space with Prabhu Deva, Sarath Kumar, and Ajith Kumar. Simran’s debut Telugu film was Abbayi Gari Pelli in 1997, alongside Suman, but this film received poor reviews from the critics.
In 1998, Simran had acted in the Tamil film Kondattam opposite Arjun Sarja, under the direction of K. S. Ravikumar. She also appeared in the Telugu film Auto Driver opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna and Deepti Bhatnagar as a supporting role.
Simran appeared in a Tamil film Vaali in 1999, opposite Ajith Kumar, under the direction of S. J. Surya. For her excellent performance in this movie, she won several awards, including a Kalaimaamani award and was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She also acted in Jodi opposite Balakrishna, which received good reviews from the critics.
In 2001, Simran acted in several Telugu films and gave some blockbusters. She won several awards, including a Filmfare award.
In 2003, Simran married Deepak, her childhood family friend. The couple has two sons, Adheep and Aadit. After marriage, she left the film industry, while she was at the top of her film career. But She made a comeback in 2008, with the Telugu film Okka Magadu opposite Balakrishna. But later she again took a break from films and started acting in television serials. She appeared in many serial shows such as Simran Thirai, Sundarakanda etc.
