Rekha is an Indian actress, she was born on 10 October 1954, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She is known as one of the finest actresses in Hindi cinema. She is better known by her stage name Rekha. She is mostly known for her Hindi films. Rekha has appeared in more than 150 films in a career spanning about 40 years. She has won three Filmfare awards and also achieved the Padma Shri in 2010.
Rekha was born as Bhanurekha Ganesan to South Indian parents. Her father’s name was Gemini Ganesan, who was a Tamil actor and her mother’s name was Pushpavalli, who was a Telugu actress. So Rekha must take her initial lesson from her parents, her father was a successful actor and she followed in his footsteps. Rekha considers Telugu as her mother tongue but she also fluent in speaking Hindi, Tamil, and English. At the time Rekha’s birth, her parents weren’t married. She has one full sister, one-half brother, and five half sisters. It was in the early 1970s when she was trying to enter into the Bollywood. She quit school to begin her career in acting.
Rekha’s first film was a Telugu film Rangula Ratnam in 1966, in the film she appeared as a child artist. In 1969, she made her debut as a heroine in the Kannada film Operation Jackpot Nalli C.I.D 999 opposite Rajkumar, under the direction of Dorai – Bhagawan. In that same year, she appeared in her first Hindi film, Anjana Safar.
In 1970, Rekha had two films released, Telugu film Amma Kosam and the Hindi film Sawan Bhadon. She had to learn Hindi, for the film Sawan Bhadon. The film became a hit and Rekha became a star overnight. Next, she appeared in several commercially successful movies such as Raampur Ka Lakshman, Kahani Kismat Ki, and Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye.
In 1980, Rekha appeared in a Hindi comedy film Khubsoorat opposite Ashok Kumar, under Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s direction. The film was successful and her performance was praised by the critics for her excellent comic timing. The film won the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Rekha won her first Best Actress award.
Rekha also paired with megastar Amitabh Bachchan in several films and most of which were hits. Media reported, they have an off-screen relationship, which ended in 1981. They appeared in Yash Chopra’s Silsila in 1981 and the film was their last film together.
In 1981, she appeared in Baseraa opposite Shashi Kapoor, under Ramesh Talwar’s direction. In the same year, her next commercial successful film was Ek Hi Bhool.
In the 1990s, there was a drop in Rekha’s career because critic was giving negative reviews of her performances. In the 2000s, she appeared in several films including Rama Rao Tatineni’s Bulandi, Khalid Muhammad’s Zubaidaa.
Rekha married Mukhesh Aggarwal, an industrialist in 1990 but he committed suicide in London. In 1973, she was rumored to have been married to actor Vinod Mehra but later the rumor was denied in the media. Currently, Rekha lives in her Bandra home, in Mumbai.
