Rajinikanth is an Indian film actor, who predominantly works in Tamil cinema, as well as South Indian films. He has been honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016 by the government of India for his contribution to arts.

Career:

Rajinikanth was born into a lower-middle class family of a police constable father. He began acting in plays while working as a bus conductor in Bangalore. He made his film debut in 1975 with Apoorva Raagangal. K. Balachander gave him a minor negative role in the film. The film was highly acclaimed by the critics and won three National film awards. His performance in the film met with positive reviews and The Hindu noted that, “Newcomer Rajinikanth is dignified and impressive”. He then went on to play negative roles in the films such as Anthuleni Katha (1976), Baalu Jenu (1976), Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram (1977) etc. He started to star in major mroles and his first release in 1978 was Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram, which was the remake of Bollywood film Amar Akbar Anthony. In the same year he played an important role in supernatural film Aayiram Jenmangal. Rajinikanth played the male lead in his break through film Aayiram Jenmangal, in which he was starred opposite Sri devi. Among a lot of release in 1978, he won Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his performance in the film Mullum Malarum. He was then starred in a number of films including Thappu Thalangal, Paavathin Sambalam, Priya, Ninaithale Inikkum, Tiger, Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai etc. During that phase Rajinikanth decided to quit acting but got back convincingly. He appeared in the film Billa, a remake of Bollywood film Don, starring Amitabh Bachchan. The film emerged as a major commercial success, eventually his first movie to be a major financial success. He played the double role once again in the film Johnny, in which he was starred alongside Sridevi. In 1981, He appeared in another remake of Bachchan’s film Thee, remake of the film Dewaar. He made his Bollywood debut in 1983 with the movie Andha Kanoon, along with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini. The film emerged as one of the highest grossing films of that time. The following year he played a triple role in the film Nallavanuku Nallavan. It went on to be a block buster at the box office and received positive critical response.

Her performance in the movie was well received by the critics and led him to win Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil. He had then several commercially successful releases like Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985), Padikkathavan (1985), Mr. Bharath (1986), Velaikaran (1987), Guru Sishyan (1988) and Dharmathin Thalaivan (1988). He started the 90’s decade with the blockbuster hit Panakkaran. He won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for his 1995’s release Muthu and 1999’s release Padayappa. In 2007, Rajinikanth acted in the film Sivaji, which emerged as a major critical and financial success earning him several awards and nomination including Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and Vijay Award for Favourite Hero. In 2010, he appeared with Aishwariya Rai in the science fiction Enthiran, released as Robot in Hindi. The film was built on a big budget and became a blockbuster hit. He won Vijay Award for Favourite Hero and for Best Villain for the performance in the film. The sequel of the film is scheduled to release in 2018. He was hospitalized in 2011 for mild foodborne illness and bronchitis. He was the second highest paid actor in Asia after Jackey Chan.

Early and personal life:

Rajinikanth was born in Bangalore, Mysore State to a family of constable father. He was inspired by hid fans to join politics and to run for the chief minister of the state. He has received a number of honorary awards including the Padma Bhusan and Padma Vibhushan by the government of India.
