Omar Sharif was an Egyptian Film and Television Actor. He is best known for his appearances in both British and American productions and also in “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), “Doctor Zhivago” (1965) and “Funny Girl” (1968).

Education and Career:

Omar Sharif completed his graduation from Alexandria’s Victoria College and then studied at Cairo University in mathematics and physics. He started his acting career in 1953 with a role in the film “Struggle in the Valley” alongside Faten Hamama. After this film, they work together in several films, including “Ayyamna El Helwa” (1955), “La Anam” (1958), “Sayedat El Kasr” (1959) and “The River of Love” (1961).

Although he lived abroad for many years, Sharif played a role in Egyptian Radio Broadcasting in the works, including “Nose and Three Eyes” and “Forbidden Love”. His English language film debut was “Lawrence of Arabia” in 1962, where he played the role of Sherif Ali. His role of Sherif Ali gave him a Best Supporting Actor nomination in Oscar, Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, Most Promising Newcomer award, and worldwide recognition as the first leading Arabic actor in the world.

In 1965, Sharif played the title role in the film “Doctor Zhivago”, with his son Tarek, who played the role of Yuri at the age 8. He also appeared in “Funny Girl” (1968) with Barbra Streisand.

Personal Life:

Omar Sharif was born in Alexandria as Michael Demitri Shalloub to a wealthy Egyptian Catholic family. Omar Sharif converted to Islam in 1955 and then married Egyptian actress Faten Hamama and they have one son Tarek and they divorced in 1966.

Death:

Omar Sharif had a heart attack and died on 10 July, 2015 in Cairo hospital
