Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair best known as Mohanlal is a lovely Indian film actor and producer who predominantly appear in Malayalam Film industry. He is one of the leading actors in Malayalam film industry who has been awarded several prestigious awards such as Padma Shri by the government of India and honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India. He has appeared in more than 300 films. He has appeared in other film industries beside Malayalam Film. Some of Mohanlal’s notable non-Malayalam films include the Tamil political drama Iruvar (1997), the Hindi crime drama Company (2002) and the Telugu action film Janatha Garage (2016). This legendary actor first appeared in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978. He made his acting debut as a teenager in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978. The release of this film was delayed 25 years. His screen debut was in the 1980 romance film Manjil Virinja Pookkal, he was portraying as a villain. He portrayed as antagonist for few years after his debut. Later In the 90s he started performing in the lead roles.  Mohanlal gained stardom after starring in a series of commercially successful films in 1986. He received Padma Sri India’s fourth highest civilian honour, for his contribution to Indian cinema by the government of India. With this mohanlal has received five National Film Awards—two Best Actor, a Special Jury Mention and a Special Jury Award for acting, and an award for Best Feature Film (as producer), also nine Kerala State Film Awards, Filmfare Awards South and numerous other accolades. He became the first and only actor to be awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army of India in 2009. Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit honorary gave him the honorary doctorate in 2010 and also University of Calicut honored him too in 2018.

Early and personal life:


Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the village of Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district on 21th May 1960. Viswanathan Nair, a former bureaucrat and law secretary with the Kerala Government, and Santhakumari was his father. Mohanlal did his schooling from Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram.

Apart from acting mohanlal has several business ventures related to film production and distribution, restaurants and packaged spices. He got married to Suchitra, daughter of Tamil film producer K. Balaji.

Mohanlal made his acting debut in 1978 with the film Thiranottam which was produced by him and some of his friends. The film was not released in time due to some censorship issues and it was released 25 years later. He made his original debut with the 1980 film Manjil Virinja Pookkal which was the directorial debut of Fazil. The film became a critical success and a box office hit. He then went on to perform in villainous role. He played negative role in 25 films in 1983 such as Poovaninju, Iniyengilum, Visa, Attakkalasham, Ente Mamattukkuttiyammakku, Engane Nee Marakkum, Unaru and some others.

1986-2000, in this period Mohanlal has played various roles such as G. Aravindan, Hariharan, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Padmarajan, Bharathan and Lohithadas. He along with actor and scriptwriter Sreenivasan, who played his sidekick in several films He became a successful hero by acting in Sasikumar’s Ivide Thudangunnu.

In 1986 he got his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the film T. P. Balagopalan M.A., directed by Sathyan Anthikad . In the same year he got a Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Malayalam) for his brilliant performance in Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam . In this year he alone appeared in 36 Malayalam Films.

The first film of the following year was a box office success where Mohanlal starred with Sreenivasan and Shobana in the Sathyan Anthikad comedy Nadodikkattu .  Later the pair appeared in the sequels named Pattanapravesham (1988) and Akkare Akkare Akkare (1990). Thoovanathumbikal directed by Padmarajan . Mohanlal won a Kerala State Special Jury Award in 1988 for his acting in Padamudra, Aryan, Vellanakalude Nadu, Ulsavapittennu and Chithram. He appeared in the movie T. P. Balagopalan M.A. directed by Sathyan Anthikad in 1986 which won him his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. In the same year he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (malayalam) for the film Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam.In 1990s he played a number of commercial films for which he got several awards and accolades and he got very much appreciated. He played the male lead in Guru directed by Rajiv Anchal which was considered as India’s official entry to the Oscars for nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category for 1997. Mohanlal’s portrayal of Sreenivasan IPS, a Mumbai police officer in Bollywood film, Company marked his Hindi film debut. The film was well received by the audiences and he received International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) and Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor. Mohanlal appeared in the second film of Blessy Thanmathra which was based on the sufferings of a people with Alzheimer’s disease. The film was well received by the critics and his performance was highly acclaimed earning him Kerala State Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor. He has been the goodwill ambassador for the government and other non-profit organizations. Mohanlal was awarded Padma Shri by the government of India. He was also honored with the rank of Lieutenant colonel from Indian Territorial Army.
