Jai made his first appearance at his age of 16 in 2002 with the film “Bhagavathi” where he played the role of actor Vijay’s younger brother. The director of this film A. Venkstesh chose him as his look is similar to Vijay. He made his debut in the leading role with a remake of a Telegu film “6 Teens”, but the film never took off. Then he concentrated on a music career and as he is the nephew of music composer Deva, he often worked in Deva’s film as a keyboardist alongside music composer Srikanth Deva and Bobo Shashi.

After a long break, Jai acted in Venkat Prabhu’s directorial debut “Chennai 600028” in 2007 which was based on gully cricket and he portrayed the role of fast bowler Raghu. The film was successful and Jai received praise for his performance. Then he became selected for the leading role by the debutante director Sashikumar for the film “Subramaniapuram” in 2008. After release, the film became a blockbuster at the box-office and he received appreciation and positive reviews from the critics and the audiences.

In 2009, Jai appeared in several films, including “Vaamanan” and “Adhe Neeram Adhe Idam”, but only “Vaamanan” did well and other films became failure at the box-office. He has appeared in romantic comedy film “Goa” in 2010 directed by Venkat Prabhu, where he played the role of a villager Vinayagam alongside Vaibhav Reddy and Premgi Amaren.

After his string of failures, Jai accepted to play a secondary role in the film “Raja Rani” in 2013. The film received positive reviews from the critics and the audience and became a blockbuster at the box office. He got the nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor (Tamil) for his performance in this film. In the same year, he acted in the fantasy comedy film “Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham” where he played the role of a Siddha doctor Ramarajan. The film became an average grosser at the box-office and received mixed reviews.

Recently, Jai has appeared in the romantic comedy film “Enakku Vaaitha Adimaigal” in 2017 where he portrayed the role of an IT worker who is unlucky in love. He also has several films scheduled for release in the year 2017 like the horror film “Balloon” and “Arjunan Kadhali” (delayed).
