Goundamani entered into the Tamil film industry through his strong theatrical background. His real name is Subramani, which was commonly called as Mani, but he famously portrayed the role of an Oor-Gounder in one of his dramas and from then on he came to be called as Goundamani. He started his acting career in films at his age of 26, when he was doing stage shows. He made his first appearance in the Tamil film with “Annakkili” in 1976. Before this, he also appeared in some un-credited role. Initially, he started acting as solo and later he paired up with actor Senthil to make a comedy duo, which was stated as Kollywood’s Laurel and Hardy. They have entertained audiences with their rib-tickling humor for more than two decades.

Goundamani’s Vazhaipazham (Banana) comedy with Senthil in the film “Karagattakaran” was very famous among people. His punch dialogue “Arasiyalla Ithellam Satharnamappa”, from the film “Suriyan” was one of his trademarks on those times. He also played the protagonist role in the films, including “Raja Enga Raja” and “Pirandhaen Valarndhaen”.

Goundamani has appeared in the leading role in more than 10 films. He also acted with many leading Tamil actors such as Prabhu, Sathyaraj, Rajinikanth, Arjun, Karthik, Parthiban, Vijay, Jayaram, Ajith Kumar, Sarath Kumar and Kamal Hassan. He has even accompanied the lead actor in several Tamil films in many scenes and in a few songs.

His role in the film “16 Vayathinile” as a sidekick to superstar Rajinikanth got many positive reviews from the audience and the critics. In the early 1980’s, he had several hit films such as “Unnai Nan Santhithen” and “Vaidhegi Kathirundal”. After a long slump, his career revival in the film “Karagatakkaran” can be attributed to comedians like Janakaraj.

During 1990s, Goundamani’s career peaked in such a height that, it was impossible to make a hit Tamil film without him. He also appeared in some films with a double-hero role, including films such as “Ullathai Allitha” along with Karthik and “Unakaaga Ellam Unakaaga”. Most of his comedy tracks were written by A. Veerappan and after the death of this writer in 2005, no one could make up that excellence in dialogues for him and he started losing popularity.

Recently, he has acted in the film “Enakku Veru Engum Kilaigal Kidayathu” and “Vaaimai” in the year 2016.
