Gautham Karthik was born in Chennai to Karthik Muthuraman, Tamil film actor and Ragini Karthik, Tamil film actress and grew up in Udhagamandalam. He is also the grandson of actor R. Muthuraman. He studied at Henron School in Ooty. Then he completed his graduation in Psychology, English & Media from Christ University in Bengaluru. He performed as a vocalist and guitarist in his band named “Dead End Street” during his college days.
Gautham Karthik made his first appearance in the film industry, when filmmaker Mani Ratnam approached him. He made his debut in popular director Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film “Kadal” in 2013, where he played the lead role Thomas. Later, Gautham revealed that, he primarily felt Mani Ratnam had offered him to be a part of the film’s technical crew, but he was surprised when he got the leading role. Gautham briefly pursued acting lessons from Kalairani and then started shooting for the film “Kadal” across different regions in South India which took close to a year to finish. The film released in February 2013 and received mixed reviews from the audience, due to Gautham’s role of a deprived youngster in this film, which caught in between the roles played by established and experienced Tamil superstars like Arjun Sarja and Arvind Swamy was unanimously praised.
After the shooting of his first film “Kadal”, he has introduced to the press media in Hyderabad at the music launch program of the Telugu version of this film.
In 2014, he has appeared as the role Jiva in the film “Sippai” directed by Saravanan and music by Yuvan Shankar Raja along with Kakshmi Menon and Vibha Natararajan. In the same year, Gautham has acted in “Yennamo Yedho”, which is a remake of Telegu film “Ala Modalaindi”. The film released in April, 2014 and received mixed reviews, while the performance of Gautham praised by the critics. Later, he appeared in a project with Aishwarya Dhanush in “Vai Raja Vai” in May, 2015 alongside actress Priya Anand. The film opened to positive reviews and was a commercial hit at the box office.
His next release is with director Rajkumar’s debut Tamil film “Rangoon” where he played the role as Venkat opposite debutante actress Sana Makbul in 2017. Following this film, he has signed for another Tamil film “Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren” opposite Vijay Sethupathy for the first time, which is to be directed by Aarumuga Kumar.
Gautham Karthik’s upcoming films include “Indrajith” directed by Kalapravu with debutante actress Sonarika Bhadoria, “Ivan Thanthiran” and “Hara Hara Mahadevanki”, which are under post production.
